The Thief From Tehran
Did you know Abe Mafi was born in Iran? Me neither, even though he was my business partner for over 10 years. Do I
care? No, but I believe that IF YOU DENY YOUR COUNTRY, YOU DENY YOUR MOTHER!
Introduction:
Hi, my name is Aris Ureña and I met Abe in the early 90s when his name was Ebbi (he changed his name because it
means shrimp in Japanese). I was in the Air Force stationed at Yokota AB and he was manager of Mex Plaza restaurant in
Roppongi. I used to go there as a costumer with my friends and always ended up playing music since I had a good
collection of Latin music. By 1992 Mex Plaza changed locations and was renamed Manila Manila. When I left the Air Force
in 1992, I decided to stay in Japan and approached Ebbi with the idea of having a Latin party every Friday and Saturday
nights at Manila Manila. Our deal was simple: I charge 1,000 yen entry fee and the bar get all the sales, needles to say
this was a total success and I was making average 300,000 yen every week for two days work. After a few months, the
owner got greedy and thought I was making too much money and decided to make his restaurant a Latin bar and just pay
somebody to play the music. As a result, my party was stopped an Ebbi was fired from his job. This is when we decided to
start our own business and started looking for a location in Roppongi, which we found with the help of his girlfriend Makika
Fukui (which he dumped after he used her).
